Protect Your Investment

If you aren't using a surge protector, you're taking a big risk. While spikes caused by lightning can damage your electrical system and appliances, there are common electrical issues that can be just as dangerous. Choosing a surge protector with advanced features will help you protect your RV.

Voltage Boosting

Electrical problems are not uncommon at campgrounds, especially ones where wiring was originally installed decades ago. When a campground is full on a hot day and everyone is running their air conditioners, low voltage may cause a brown-out situation and damage your RV appliances.

Voltage boosters respond by automatically boosting voltage when low levels are detected. As voltage drops, electrical circuits respond by increasing amps. The booster converts the increased amps into volts to keep your connection strong. If volts drop below a usable threshold, it automatically cuts off power.

Great unit if no one steals it. The design is fundamentally flawed that Power Watchdog didn't include ANY WAY to lock it to the pedestal. WTF were they thinking? Go ahead- connect your RV to this, go explore the area, and HOPE its still there when you get back. THIS IS NOT A TRIVIAL EXPENSE!

by:

The very first camp-spot we stayed at had low voltage and it worked flawlessly. Especially like that I can monitor it in real time with the app too. At one point the voltage dropped to 104 and it boosted to 114. Very happy with the purchase.

by:

Works so far as advertised. Sturdy construction. Fast shipping and good communication from etrailer.

by:

We were having low voltage issues at our campsite, especially on hot and muggy weekend days when the campground was full. Our Hughes Watchdog would cut the power to our camper multiple times a day to protect our appliances. Since we switched to the power center, we haven't lost power once. It is so nice knowing we can keep our animals and ourselves comfortable on those hot, dog days of summer. It's well worth the price

by:

Works wonderfully and compact. Glad to see combo surge and voltage booster in single model. I did an internal installation inside my Airstream. Tested at 30 amp outlet and it boosted 119 volts to 123 volts. I destroyed my RV refrigerator this summer at a campground with low voltage (107). I’m excited to see how this performs next time I’m in a similar situation.

by:

I waited several months for this second generation to be made as first generation sold out, it turns out it was worth the weight of five months no fault of E trailer. This is constantly boosting my camper up shovel volts on both legs, but when people come home in the afternoon and turn their air conditioner on the power in this campground drops dramatically. I have seen it as low as 104 V at times on both legs. This does the trick I am going to add a plug near my auto rolling main wire and mounted permanently inside as I move from campground to campground and really don’t trust it outside even locked on a pole.
So far I love this thing as I have stopped opening the panel and looking to see what voltage I have coming in. With Bluetooth, I can just simply look at my phone and see how it’s working. I was also under the impression that it would temporarily boost the power, but I was wrong. It maintains the power that it generates so you constantly have the boost in voltage.

Glad to hear you are liking it, Jimmy! The wait was a bummer, but I don't think I have heard a single person that was unhappy with the upgrade as of yet. Definitely sounds like it was worth it! : ) Are you traveling around the country or do you have a few spots you tend to always go to?

by:

We work camp at a park that has low power issues. We currently use a hardwired progressive Industries 50 amp unit. We ordered the Watchdog unit to assist with this. We put the progressive industry unit in bypass mode which required us to use the “RV neutral detection E8” in the disabled mode. We really enjoy this unit. It also provides useful information when you are away from the coach, being able to view the consumption/voltage.
I attached the neutral disable screen since it’s not intuitive.

by:

These autoformers have been on back order for a few months, but worth the wait. It’s nice to be confident in your electrical supply, especially in many older parks with varying power distribution systems. Hughes also provides great customer service and support.

by:

So so good. Easy to setup and get going. Had to turn off the neutral detection, I am not missing a neutral, so not too sure what is wrong with that. I have the hardwired power watchdog wired in after the power center and have never received that error on this same setup. Other than that working good. Boosted voltage from 110v to 121v.

by:

Great for bumping voltage if you get low voltage plus full ems capabilities. Normally raises 2 to 3 volts on normal and ten if drops below 114 or so. It also has Bluetooth and wifi monitoring through their phone app but note wifi connection is 2.4ghz Only and doesn't work on 5.0 ghz at all

by:

Got this to replace the first-generation Hughes autoformer and its performance is better. The ability to check the voltage from your phone is a game changer. Definitely recommend if you are a full time RV'r and want to protect your electronics in your RV.

by:

It is a very nice product, but no place to lock it down. All one has to do is cut the plastic handle and it is gone. It would hardly take any effort for someone to steal it, but it does work very nice.

by:

The unit appears to be working fine. For other users, attach the unit via Bluetooth first, then do the WiFi connection. Otherwise, it won't attach to the WiFi network. Confirmed by Hughes.

by:

Easy to set up. Works as advertised. No more dealing with poor quality electricity at the campground.

by:

Fast shipping. Just hooked up and tested, works great. Can wait for upcoming trip to really test it’s capabilities

by:

So far so good. Time will tell when I get to an area and the voltage is low and the unit takes care of it. I can see at home the voltage in is at 124V and the unit is correcting it to 127V.

by:

Just got it and works perfectly. No reason not to give it 5* yet.

  • Can the Watchdog Power Center Surge Protector Be Put On It's Back?
Hey Bud. It doesn't say you can't put the Watchdog Power Center Surge Protector and Voltage Booster item # HU74ZR on its back but you are going to block some of the ventilation. The unit does warm up and it will shut off if the internal temperature gets over 165°. The Watchdog Power Center Surge Protector item # HU74ZR measures 5-1/2" long x 10-1/2" wide x 13-1/2" tall. How much space do you have and is there ventilation where you're going to be mounting the surge protector?

  • Can Watchdog Power Center Surge Protector Be Used On Both 30A AND 50A RV?
Brian, you’ll each want the version that matches your RV’s service. The # HU84ZR is built for 30A rigs like your friend’s Cougar, while the # HU74ZR is made for 50A rigs like your Cedar Creek. They both do the same job - voltage boosting, surge protection, and emergency shutoff - but the wiring and capacity are different. You can use adapters to plug into smaller pedestals and still use the 50A on both, but that would sort of defeat the purpose of getting the bigger unit, and you wouldn't...

  • Can Watchdog Power Center Surge Protector and Voltage Booster Wire to Outlet of RV
Hey David, do you mean to cut the plug off of the Watchdog Power Center Surge Protector and Voltage Booster # HU74ZR and then wire it to your RV outlet? If so, it would be just a matter of cutting and stripping wires to pull this off.

  • Can The Hughes Watchdog 50 amp Work With a Generator
Thanks for your question, Zach. The short answer is yes, the Power Watchdog # HU74ZR can work with a generator, BUT it depends on the type of generator you have. Some generators have a “floating neutral,” which can make surge protectors think there’s a wiring problem. If that’s the case, you may just need a simple neutral bonding plug for it to work correctly. If you can tell me the brand and model of your generator, I can dig deeper into this for you.

  • Which Surge Protector Is Best Option For 2023 Grand Design Reflection With 50A Service Plug In
Kendra, congrats on the new Reflection! Those are super nice. Since your RV has 50 amp service, you’ll want the Watchdog Power Center Surge Protector # HU74ZR. The Watchdog Surge Protector # HU72VR is 30 amp and won’t cover both legs of your panel, and it gets hardwired in which isn't for everyone! The # HU74ZR simply plugs in without any hardwiring, will protect against surges, monitor each leg individually, and boost low voltage on heavy draw days. Have you run into low power at campgrounds...

  • Availability of Shelf or Stand for Watchdog Power Center Surge Protector and Voltage Booster
Hi Jim; a stand/shelf for the Watchdog Power Center Surge Protector and Voltage Booster # HU74ZR is not something available at this time. As you said, it is a new unit so it is possible it will be offered at a later date but, for now you will have to come up with your own solution for a stand or shelf for the power center if you want one. What kind of RV do you have?

  • Can Watchdog Power Center Surge Protector Be Mounted In Compartment On Its Back?
Steve, you’re right to ask. The Watchdog Power Center Surge Protector for RVs and campers # HU74ZR should never be mounted on its back. It’s designed to rest on its legs in the upright position so the ventilation slots can do their job. If it’s laid flat, airflow is blocked and there’s a real chance of overheating - the unit will even shut itself down if internal temps climb past 165°. Also, this unit is meant to sit outside near the power pedestal, then your rv plug runs outside to connect...

  • How Do I Know If Surge Module Is Used Up On Watchdog HU74ZR? Is Replacement Module Available?
Terry, one of the Watchdog’s # HU74ZR best features is the replaceable surge module. If it takes a hit and uses up its capacity, the bulldog face will glow red, and the app will throw an E9 error code. You’ll also see Hughes’ toll-free number pop up, or go to hughesautoformers.com to order a replacement module # HU24ZR instead of replacing the entire unit. This is a really nice benefit compared to some others on the market. Do you like the idea of keeping a spare module on hand, or just...

  • Can Watchdog Surge Protector Voltage Boosters Be Locked To Prevent Theft At Campsite?
Good thinking, Andy good name btw. The Watchdog Surge Protector / Voltage Booster 50A # HU74ZR is a hefty unit, but it does sit outside at the pedestal, so security matters. It has a metal loop built in for a padlock or cable lock, which you can run around the pedestal post. Many campers also place it inside a ventilated plastic tote or use a locking cable like the # e98891 to keep it secure and out of sight. Do you usually camp in busy RV parks, or more out-of-the-way places?

  • How Long Does Watchdog Voltage Booster Surge Protector Shut Down For Low Voltage?
Anna, that’s one of the Watchdog’s best features. If the # HU74ZR cuts power, it continues monitoring, and once voltage is back in the safe range it will reconnect after a 90-second delay. That pause is long enough to protect sensitive appliances like A/C compressors from short-cycling. Have you had quite a few power drops in the past?

  • Do Watchdog Surge Protector Voltage Boosters Kick On And Off Automatically During Power Dips?
Derk, both the # HU84ZR 30A and # HU74ZR 50A handle it automatically. If park voltage sags below about 113V, the Power Center adds about a 10% boost. You don’t have to do anything - it senses the drop and corrects it so your A/C compressors and appliances stay safe. If the power gets dangerously low below ~104V, the unit will shut down altogether until voltage comes back into range. If you have any other thoughts or concerns, let me know! Have you used any units like this before?

  • Does 50A Voltage Booster From Watchdog Protect RV When Plugged Into 30A Site With Adapter?
Laura, yes, the # HU74ZR will still give you surge protection and monitoring when stepped down to a 30A pedestal, but keep in mind the boosting function won’t give you more amps than the pedestal supplies. You’ll be limited to 30A total. What it does do is keep the voltage stable on that single leg, which is important if you’re running A/C and other applicances on a hot day and pushing close to the 30A max. It will still function the same way, meaning it will still boost voltage if it drops...

  • Does Watchdog Surge Protector With Voltage Booster 50A Cut Power When Error Is Detected?
Yes Thomas, it will. The # HU74ZR watches for open neutral, open ground, and reverse polarity, along with high/low voltage. If the pedestal wiring fails, it will immediately shut down power and throw a red Bulldog face with the error code. That saves you from frying circuit boards or appliances. Do you usually camp at older parks where wiring can be sketchy?

  • Can You Monitor Each Leg Separately To Check Power Balance Of 50A Surge Protector For 5th Wheel RV?
Yes Cheryl, with the # HU74ZR 50A you’ll see volts and amps for each leg (L1 and L2) individually, both on the display screen and in the app. That’s especially helpful if one leg is sagging under load while the other looks fine. The booster will step in automatically if either side drops too low, and you’ll know at a glance how balanced your rig is. That's super handy for if any issues ever arise at a campground where their power is unstable. Would you like me to walk you through how to...
